You open Search Console and see your rankings sitting exactly where they were last month, yet the clicks are lower.
Nothing seems wrong, but the traffic graph keeps sliding down.
That’s when you realise you’ve entered the world of zero-click searches.
It’s one of the things Google doesn’t warn you about, but you or your SEO consultant start noticing eventually.
What zero-click searches really are
A zero-click search is when someone searches and gets what they need directly from the results page, and then leaves without visiting any site.
This happens all the time, especially now in 2025.
Google pulls answers straight into the SERP through:
- An AI overview that summarises your content.
- A featured snippet that quotes you but keeps the user there.
- A map, shopping, or FAQ box that gives away the key detail.
Your result is still there, just further down and competing with Google’s own “answers.” The user is satisfied and you lose the click.
Why it’s happening more often
Google’s goal is speed and to satisfy intent faster. Right now it wants users to find what they’re looking for without the need to even scroll let alone click. That’s great for experience, but not so great for your traffic.
Zero-click searches appear most in:
- informational queries (“how to”, “what is…”)
- local lookups (maps and contact info)
- product or comparisons (where shopping results dominate)
So while your keyword positions stay the same, your real visibility and clicks shrink.
What this does to your data
The tricky part is that everything still looks fine when you check your SEO tools.
- Impressions are stable.
- Average position hasn’t changed.
- Nothing looks broken.
Yet the clicks keep dropping. That’s the zero-click effect. People are still searching, they’re just getting the answer directly from Google instead of your site.
Most SEO tools don’t really capture that shift. They still report rankings, not real visibility. And that’s where it gets confusing, because on paper, it looks like you’re doing everything right. I explain that part more here: Why your SEO tools show rankings that don’t match reality.
What you should take from it
If your rankings look healthy but your traffic keeps sliding, don’t just stare at the position column. Start looking at what the actual results page now shows(Go to Google). Most likely, it’s packed with AI boxes, snippets, images, products or video results that push your result further down.
You wont fix this by chasing new keywords, like many people think. It’s about understanding intent and deciding what type of content still makes people click.
That’s the kind of strategy work I do inside a full SEO audit. I enjoy finding out where visibility is lost and letting you know what’s worth fighting for.
