Can you do SEO yourself?

—

One of the biggest misconceptions about SEO is that it’s too complicated for business owners to understand.

I think every business owner should have a basic understanding of SEO. The better you understand how people search, how your website is structured, and why content matters, the easier it becomes to make better decisions for your business.

That doesn’t mean you need to become an SEO expert.

It simply means understanding enough to know what your website needs and where your time is best spent.

Learning SEO isn’t the difficult part

Many business owners are perfectly capable of improving their own websites.

You can learn how to write better content, improve your service pages, organise your navigation, optimise page titles, and create content around the questions your customers are already asking.

The difficult part usually isn’t implementing SEO. It’s knowing whether you’re solving the problem that’s actually holding your website back.

That’s one of the reasons I created what I call the SEO Maturity Framework. I usually visualise and explain it with the helloSEN SEO pyramid. Before thinking about rankings, backlinks, or advanced SEO, I believe every business should first make sure people understand what they do, then make sure search engines understand it too. Only after those foundations are in place does it make sense to focus on growing your visibility and authority.

My perspective

I started my SEO career in one of the world’s most competitive search industries, online gambling. It wasn’t unusual to work alongside specialists focusing entirely on technical SEO, content, digital PR, or authority building. Every small improvement mattered because every keyword was highly competitive.

Working in that environment taught me something I still carry with me today.

The biggest challenge isn’t learning how to do SEO. It’s understanding which parts of SEO actually deserve your attention.

I’ve seen business owners spend weeks reading about backlinks, technical SEO, or Google’s latest updates when the biggest opportunity was simply making their website easier to understand.

I’ve never seen a backlink fix a homepage that doesn’t explain what the business actually does.

Knowing where to start

That’s why I often recommend beginning with a strategy session or an SEO review.

Sometimes all you need is an experienced pair of eyes to identify the opportunities most likely to move your business forward. From there, you can decide what you’d like to implement yourself and where it makes sense to ask for help.

Some business owners enjoy learning SEO and doing most of the work themselves. Others would rather focus on running their business and leave parts of it to someone else.

Both approaches can work.

So, can you do SEO yourself?

Of course you can! The important thing isn’t whether you do everything yourself or hire someone else.

It’s understanding what your business actually needs and focusing your time on the improvements that will create the biggest impact.
